What is the PTA?

PTA stands for Parent Teacher Association. It is a group made up of parents, teachers, school administrators, and community members that work together to provide enrichment opportunities for our children and to help out at our school. We plan and fund events that help the students learn, have fun, and bring together the community.

What does the PTA do for the students at Sequoyah ES?

The Sequoyah PTA helps with many programs and activities at the school, examples include:

  • Funding to reimburse school staff for some of the materials they buy for classrooms
  • Organizing fun events for students such as dances, bingo night and movie night
  • Coordinating after-school clubs
  • Supporting kindergarten orientation and putting together a special farewell for the 5th graders each year
  • Publishing the yearbook and school directory.

Also important are the educational and cultural events the PTA sponsors, such as bringing book authors into the school to talk to the children and international night that displays art, food, and activities from many cultures around the globe. The PTA also maintains an email listserve, Facebook page, and web site to inform and collaborate with the community.

Why should I join the PTA?

Studies consistently show that children whose parents are involved in their schools have better grades, score higher on tests, and have a more successful school experience. Becoming involved in the PTA is not just about service – it is about connecting with other parents. PTA provides opportunities to meet and to talk with other parents. PTA encourages learning and the sharing of ideas and provides an open forum to discuss important concerns with other parents and the school. PTA provides the opportunity to serve, to volunteer, and to contribute to the educating of our children.

What do PTA members do?

There are many ways to become involved in PTA activities. Opportunities include things such as:

  • volunteering to work at the book fair
  • copying flyers
  • making food for a teacher appreciation lunch
  • translating documents into Spanish
  • working at the snack bar at a dance
  • making phone calls
  • coordinating a school event, (e.g., international night, dances, movie nights)

Involvement and volunteer work can be coordinated around your schedule.

Do I have to come to meetings?

Attendance at the PTA meetings held at the school is recommended but not required. PTA meetings are a good way to meet other parents, learn about what is going on at the school, and find out more about PTA-sponsored programs and activities. Child care is provided during the meetings.

Why do we have to pay dues? Where does that money go?

The dues paid help with funding PTA activities and a portion goes to both the Maryland and National PTA organizations.
